Quentin Tarantino, epic film maker who created the hit movie "Kill Bill", brings his sixth movie to the screen in the film Inglorious Basterds which was first previewed in May during the Cannes Film Festival. Tarantino, well known for his long movies circling in droves, does not change the format here either as the film has a run time of 2 hours and 32 minutes. Released on August 21st, 2009, the movie stars Brad Pitt as Lieutenant Aldo Raine. Other stars include Cristoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa and Melanie Laurent as Shosanna Dreyfus. The movie won an Oscar and was well worth being seen on the big screen but it is equally as good if you like to watch movies online. Youll still experience the power of the films acting and plot lines.
The movie begins with the Jewish Shosanna witnessing Hans slaughtering her family in a Nazi occupied France. She attempts to get revenge for her family when she is recruited by Fredrick Zoller to attent a movie premiere. The Basterds decide that they are going to attend because all the Nazi officers should be there. The Basterds, as they are referred to are a group of Jewish-American soldiers who are led by Lt. Aldo Raine. They seek to get revenge against the Nazi officers.
The Basterds are their own group of people though. They have a mission to kill the enemy and do it quite violently by scalping the individuals they kill. They see the movie premiere which should have Hitler, Goering, and Martin Bormann in attendance. The lieutenant sees this chance and hopes to be able to end the war once and for all. The Basterds and Shosaanna have the same goal in mind.
Tarantino uses his typical formula of introducing his movies in chapters and this one begins with the "One upon a time in Nazi France". Tarantino loves his characters and he is a director that not only focuses on the action but also the voices that they have. His characters are very vocal in his films and Tarantino focuses on this much like he does in other films he has created. He is a unique director who no one has been able to emulate no matter how much they try. He is willing to go against the grain for traditional ideas.
He is not the first director who has been willing to delve into the National Socialism though and his depiction is not exactly the easiest or mellowest. He isnt afraid of being violent and showing it through his films. This isnt the first film who has ventured to these proportions. He is not focusing on the history of the war but worries more about his film and how it turns out. An accurate representation isnt his main goal.
Inglorious Basterds is a film that should be viewed by everyone whether they are watching it on the big movie screen, choose to watch movies online, or rent the movie and watch it on her DVD player.
