They say that Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love. They also say good fences make good neighbours. Putting the two together you can easily see when it comes to a Philadelphia fence why chain link is usually the number one option. A chain link fence will provide some privacy, will keep your family and pets safe but will still open up the option to be neighborly, or should I say brotherly, to your neighbors.
A chain link fence can be a great do-it-yourself project, however it can be just as cost effective to have a fence company install the fence for you. Either way there are some things that you should know before deciding on the type of chain link fence to install. The following article will provide you with some direction when it comes to picking a chain link fence.
There are three main options to choose from when deciding on a chain link fence, and they are:
1 - Gauge
2 - Mesh Size
3 - Protective Coating
1 - Gauge
Probably the most important option is the gauge of the wire being used in the chain link fence. The gauge will give you an idea on how much steel is actually being used, which is a good indication on how strong the chain link fence will actually be. The smaller the number, for example an 11-gauge chain link fence, the higher the amount of steel being used. Typical gauges are 13, 12 and 1/2, 11 and 1/2, 11, 9 and 6. For a chain link fence to surround your residential property you will want to look at something between 11 and 1/2 to 9-gauge. The heaviest gauge, 6-gauge, is usually used for heavy industrial areas where the lightest gauges, 13 and 12 and 1/2, are commonly used for temporary fencing.
2 - Mesh Size
The mesh size relates to how far apart the diamond shaped patterns are in the chain link. Typical mesh sizes are 2 and 3/8 of an inch, being the largest, right down to a 1/2 or 3/8 inch mesh, these last two usually used in areas of high-security. For a pool fence it is recommended to use 1 and 1/2 inch wire mesh.
3 - Protective Coating
The most common protective coating for chain link fence is zinc. Although it is a little more expensive, zinc will help protect the steel mesh from rust. Aluminum coated chain link is less expensive than zinc but where zinc will help to protect the steel even when the mesh is cut or scraped, aluminum will not so has the potential to rust. Finally there is the option to choose vinyl coating. This is especially useful if you are looking for a touch of color to your chain link fence.
Whether you end up installing the fence yourself or decide to hire a professional do it for you, make sure you take the time to choose the appropriate type of chain link fence that best suits your needs because after all a chain link fence will give you great piece of mind when it comes to the safety of your pets and your family, but you still want to makes sure it looks nice.
